I did a little research, and it's hard to tell if France was trying to protect it's nuclear test, or if they were totally out of line due to the Rainbow Warrior's history of ramming other ships? Regardless, the France Government signed off on the action that resulted in the deaths.
ANYWAY - I would have to say that Mr. Carlson's statement is a bit off board. This particular event, no matter the original intent, shouldn't be held up as a positive. Because it wasn't.
AND - not a lot of Republicans tend to be pro-France anyway.
I was six when this event happened, and it definitely left an indelible mark on most New Zealanders - the fact that another country would send spies into OUR country to destroy a protest ship, especially considering New Zealand's long-standing anti-nukes stance - I just found his flippant remarks about someone's death so infuriating.
I did a bit more digging over the weekend because this really bothered me. And I learned that the Rainbow Warrior was going to put itself inside of the assigned test zone; thereby endangering it's crew. The mission was to sink/stop the ship, but the 2 (I think?) deaths on the ship were accidental.
Now I'm talking about the act itself - not the effect that nuclear testing may have had on the inhabitants, because that I don't know. But Greenpeace isn't always peaceful in their protests and that can't be overlooked.
