"Your school uniform's too short, for that matter," he added. "It should come down to your knees when you're sitting down. It's in the handbook."
Laura looked at him cautiously. She did not want to misunderstand his remark.
"I've let the hem down as far as it will go," she explained.
"You need another," Sorry said. "There's the rest of this term and then two months the other side of Christmas before you can change into winter gear. And you'll probably grow over the holidays."
"Sorensen, you're not at school now," said his mother.
"I know that," Sorensen replied. "And she knows it. I was being subtle, letting her know I was looking at her legs. She's got very sexy legs but I'm not allowed to tell her about them at school."

Something is going to happen, Laura thought. She was going to be kissed. On one side of a kiss was childhood, sunshine, innocence, toys and, on the other, people embracing, darkness, passion and the admittance of a person who, no matter how loved, must always have a quality of otherness, not only to her confidence, but somehow inside her sealing skin.
However, Sorry did not kiss her, but put his left hand on her breast without once taking his eyes from her face or ceasing to smile at her. Laura felt her own expression become incredulous. Nevertheless, his touch was real, and immediately changed Sorry, whose air of menace had given him only a moment earlier a sort of impervious glitter, for his face softened somehow, became a little unfocused as if he were more distrubed by it than she was.
"Don't!" she said, inspired. "Remember, you have to be invited."
"W-well invite m-me in then," he demanded, beginning to stammer, but as his voice lost confidence his half-threatened embrace became more intrusive. At that moment the phone rang, and she felt Sorry, leaning against her, catch his breath in surprise, and perhaps, relief.
"Saved by the bell, Chant," he remarked.
"I wouldn't have invited you," she called after him as he went to answer the phone. "You were saved as much as I was."

"How did you get in?" she asked. "I thought I bolted the door." She felt him smile.
"Very sensible," he said, "but it's a poor witch that can't go through a door."
"Aren't you pushing it a bit far?" Laura asked sternly. "I think what you've been doing to me counts as sexual harassment."
"You've been reading Woman's Weekly," Sorry replied. "Never mind - as harassment goes I expect it's the best sort there is."
4. Till I Get My Way - The Black Keys
Love me, don't leave me / Make me feel you need me / You kill me and thrill me / Don't you know that I will be / Calling on you everyday / 'Till I get my way
Laura looked at the little stamp, frowning again. The outline had changed, but she could not quite see how.
"Shall I try it out?" she asked.
"No point!" said Sorry with a sigh. "You've already put your mark on me, Chant. Wrap it in silk! Sleep with it under your pillow! Speak to it by name! Hold it against your heart!" Laura surrendered the stamp with reluctance, but Sorry simply wrapped it in the handkerchief and returned it to her.
"And welcome!" said Winter with her rare smile. She kissed Laura's left cheek.
"Welcome!" said Miryam kissing her right cheek. Sorry and Laura looked at each other.
"Well, why not?" Sorry asked her. "Let's do it because I want to this time, Chant," and he kissed her very gently. It reminded Laura of the soft but heavy kisses Jacko used to give when he was just learning to kiss, and found it very disturbing, for it seemed as if he kissed her for Jacko in the past, himself in the present and for another unknown child somewhere in the future. Indeed, he looked startled himself when the kiss was over, as if he too had found it haunted.
5. Turn Into - The Yeah Yeah Yeahs
I know what I know / I know this last time round / I'll hear it in my head real low / Turn into the only thing you'll ever know / Only thing you ever know
"Are you doing those photographs?" Laura asked him, and he groaned and said, "The romance is going out of my life before it ever got properly into it. I'm becoming an open book to you. Never mind. I'll fix you, see if I don't," and he put the photographs in the fixing solution.
"I know something you don't," Laura said, unexpectedly triumphant, for a certainty, as clear and sparkling as a sea wave, burst over her. "You're the one that's fixed, poor Sorry, fixed by love no matter how scared you are of it. You can't twist out of it. At least I'm clever enough to know that."
"An ever-fixed mark," Sorry said uncertainly, "looking on t-tempests and never b-being shaken, and all that? You might be r-right, but only time will tell. Time t-tells everything, given time."
Outside in the city, traffic lights changed colours, casting quick spells of prohibition and release. Cars hesitated, then set off again, roaring with urgency through the maze of the Gardendale subdivision, a labyrinth in which one could, after all, find a firebird's feather, or a glass slipper or the footprints of the minotaur quite as readily as in fairy tales, or the infinitely dividing paths of Looking-Glass land. Kate and Chris danced, the potatoes over-cooked slightly, Sorry carefully hung his pictures out to dry while his cat watched him, purring for no reason, Laura dreamed of many things, and Jacko, pleased and puzzled by other people's lives, fell asleep on her knee while the strands of wool along the edge of his Ruggie swayed backwards and forwards on the small tide of his even breath.
